I love helping to redefine the word “writing” in the minds of kids who have not yet had positive associations with the word. My favorite moments are when those who may struggle and resist at first suddenly find their way in, arriving at their own unique voices, ignited by inspiration and carried along on the group’s general enthusiasm. One second grader in my current residency at Ira B. Jones recently broke the three-sentence barrier he’d had since the school year began. He wrote a page and a half story about a pinecone falling from a tree! The whole class was delightfully surprised, especially his teacher--but most importantly, the writer himself.
